Frequently asked questions

Protecting my meter

What should you do if you have a major leak in your system
  • Immediately close the shut-off valve for your private installation (located after your meter). If your installation does not have one or if it is faulty, contact a plumber to remedy this as soon as possible.
  • In an absolute emergency, you are allowed to close the SWDE shut-off valve (although normally intended for meter replacement) and contact us.
Who should you contact if you have a problem with your meter or pipes?
  • For a problem with your private installation: contact a licensed plumber.
  • If you have a problem with your meter or are in any doubt: contact the SWDE.
Why is it important to protect your water meter?

Whether during periods of extreme cold, a prolonged absence or an incident planned by the SWDE, protecting your water meter is an essential precaution. These situations can expose your meter to risks such as leaks, and cause material damage or prove costly. Discover all our advice

What should I do before leaving for a prolonged absence?
  • Turn off the water supply: Turn off the water supply tap located after your meter.
  • Drain the system: Open the bleed valve to drain off any remaining water.
  • In winter: Protect your pipes and meter from freezing.
What precautions should you take in winter to protect your water meter?
  • If the meter is outside:
    • Seal the inside of the casing with insulating materials (polystyrene, straw wrapped in film or a plastic bag, etc.).
    • Check that the cover is watertight and that the pipes are protected.
    • Only if absolutely necessary, and if other solutions are not possible, maintain a constant circulation in the system by letting a thin stream of water flow. The extra consumption associated with this solution will be reflected in your annual bill.
  • If the meter is indoors:
    • Keep the room temperature above 0°C.
    • Insulate the pipes and meter with dry materials (avoid materials that absorb moisture).
What should you do if your pipes are frozen?
  1. Turn off the water to prevent a leak when the water thaws.
  2. Heat the pipes slowly with a hairdryer or warm cloth (do not use a flame).
  3. Once thawed, open the water supply slowly and keep an eye out for leaks.
What materials should you use to insulate your meter and pipes in the event of frost?
  1. Recommended: Polystyrene sheets, bags of polystyrene foam balls, straw wrapped in foil or a plastic bag.
  2. To be avoided: Cloth, newspaper, glass wool or any moisture-absorbing material.
How should you prepare for a planned water cut?
  • Before: Build up a reserve of water for your needs (household appliances, hygiene, etc.).
  • During: Close the valve after your meter to avoid any inconvenience.
  • After: Purge your pipes by letting about 10 litres of water flow to remove any residue.
