What is the Water Social Fund? How does it work?

Every time someone pays their water bill, a small proportion (in 2025: €0.0332 per m³) is set aside in a solidarity fund. This money makes it possible to help people in difficulties pay their water bills.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible if you are:

  • An individual (not a company),

  • A tenant (whether or not your name is on the water contract) or homeowner, whether or not you are receiving social benefits

  • Living in Wallonia (outside the German-speaking Community)

  • In difficulty paying your water bill for your primary residence (where you live),

  • Your water consumption must be personal (not for a commercial activity).

How can you benefit?

Get in touch with the Public Social Action Centre (CPAS) in your municipality. A social worker will listen to you, see whether you are eligible for the Water Social Fund depending on your situation, and guide you through the procedures.

Technical Improvement Fund (FAT)

There is also a Technical Improvement Fund (FAT): this can finance certain work (e.g. repairing a leak, installing a mixer tap, energy-saving flushing, etc.) to reduce your water consumption.

💡 Please note: if you are a tenant, the owner remains responsible for certain works. The landlord has a duty to maintain and repair the rented property. The FAT will not act in their place.
